Thursday, February 5th from 6:30p - 7:00p at Las Flores Middle School

CUSD will host Parent University evenings beginning in February.  The goal of these meetings is to give parents a deeper understanding of the current California state standards, also known as Common Core Standards.  Math will be the first subject covered giving parents an opportunity to truly see what is being taught in the classrooms.  In addition to Middle School parents, interested parents at the feeder elementary schools are encouraged to attend.  This is an excellent opportunity for parents that have concerns about subject matter to experience it up close and personal.

Capistrano Unified Announces Next Superintendent

Kirsten Vital to Lead the Highest-Performing, Large School District in California

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO— Kirsten M. Vital has been named the new Superintendent of the Capistrano Unified School District, succeeding Dr. Joseph M. Farley who will retire on July 1, 2014, as the leader of Orange County’s second-largest school district.

The Board of Trustees made the selection of Ms. Vital following a closed session meeting on June 14, 2014. A contract is expected to be ratified on Wednesday, June 25 at the Board of Trustees’ regularly scheduled meeting.

Ms. Vital Superintendent comes to CUSD from Alameda Unified School District in Alameda, California, where she is Superintendent.

A seasoned educator, Ms. Vital has held key leadership positions in some of California’s largest districts, including Los Angeles Unified School District and Oakland Unified School District. Vital has been a teacher, an assistant principal, principal, and a college professor.

To find the ideal candidate, the Board of Trustees conducted a nationwide search. The search was guided by a detailed list of leadership criteria, a web-based survey, community forum, and responses from focus groups representing community and district stakeholders.

Board President John M. Alpay expressed his confidence in Vital, "We wanted to ensure that we had the right person for this very important role during this critical time in our District," he said. "Because of her demonstrated track record of success, the Board of Trustees is certain that Kirsten Vital is the right leader who will take our District to new heights of student achievement."

Retiring Superintendent Dr. Joseph M. Farley has been widely praised for his leadership of the District over the last four years. Capistrano Unified schools have consistently ranked in the top one percent of California’s public schools. Successfully weathering the most recent economic recession, the District’s fiscal position was certified as "positive" by the Orange County Department of Education.

With over 4,000 employees, the new Superintendent will take the helm of the largest employer in South Orange County.

TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN UPDATE: May 23, 2012

We are pleased to announce that CUSD is offering the Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program for fall of 2012.   To qualify, students must turn five years old Nov. 2-Dec. 2, 2012.    TK is being offered to students who, due to the kindergarten age rollback, miss the cutoff to enter kindergarten.   This will be the first year of a two-year kindergarten program provided for in the SB 1381 legislation or the Kindergarten Readiness Act 2010. Parents will need to transport their children.  At the end of the TK year, students will matriculate to their home schools for regular kindergarten.

To pre-register for the program, go to CUSD’s website under Parent Links, Transitional Kindergarten and Intent to Register.  The Intent to Register may be emailed directly to the District or delivered to the District office.  Pre-registered students will be assigned to one of three sites throughout the District, Crown Valley, Benedict and Bathgate Elementary Schools.  If you have any questions, please call or email Becky West at bwest@capousd.org  or 949-234-9261.

Important Parent Portal Registration Information- sign- up by June 22!!

Dear Parents:

The CUSD Parent Portal is now available for parents of all current K-12 students.  We strongly encourage you to register for a Parent Portal account before school offices close in June, so you are able to take advantage of the new online re-registration system for the 2012-13 school year.   When the window opens in August, parents with portal accounts will have the ability to use this online system for re-registration, rather than completing the large, traditional paper packet. Parents will also have the ability at any time during the year to update student demographic and emergency contact records, view real-time daily attendance reports, print report cards and transcripts and also be able to download important documents directly from the portal.

Letters were mailed home the week of February 13 to parents of secondary students with specific information related to Parent Portal account creation. Parents of elementary students received their letters during parent conferences.  The information in the letter includes your student’s ID, home phone, and a unique verification code which will be needed during the portal registration process.  Using the information from the letter, simply logon to abi.capousd.org where you will find directions and a link for creating your Parent Portal account.  There is also a portal link on each school’s homepage. A HELP link is available at abi.capousd.org if you have questions during the registration process.  If you have lost your letter, please contact your school office before the last day of school.

Student Fees

California law does not allow school districts to charge fees to students for curricular and extracurricular activities.  However, as you are aware, due to state budget cut backs, schools can no longer afford to fund many of these activities.  Therefore, we are requesting voluntary donations from parents to offset the costs of these programs.  Parents are not required to make donations and all students may participate in extracurricular activities regardless of whether their parents make a donation.  For additional information, please visit the CUSD link on Student Fees at:

SCHOOLS CLOSED ON FRIDAY DUE TO POWER OUTAGE

All schools in the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) will be closed on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, due to the power outage affecting Southern Orange and San Diego counties.

The District, like many school districts serviced by San Diego Gas and Electric, has decided to cancel classes for its students. A decision regarding Friday evening sporting events has not yet been made.

“We have no assurance that power will be restored by the time school begins tomorrow morning, and local emergency jurisdictions have advised the District to suspend classes until power is restored,” Superintendent Joe Farley said. “We are sorry for the obvious inconvenience to our working families, but it is clearly not proper to have students in school without electricity to power key systems including lights, refrigeration, and computers.”

The decision to close schools was made for a number of reasons, including the lack of power at school sites and the difficulty many staff members will have commuting to work from their homes in Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties. Only the CUSD staff members who have been specifically notified should report to work on Friday, Sept. 9.

Power is expected to be restored in time for school on Monday. For more information, please call the District’s Hotline at (949) 234-5575, which will be open at 7 a.m. or visit the District website at www.capousd.org.

INFLUENZA PREPAREDNESS FOR SCHOOLS:

Despite the remaining flashes of hot weather, it looks like Fall is finally now upon us and with it the annual fight with the flu begins.  While we all hope that this flu season will not be as bad as has been reported, it is prudent for us to make some simple and common sense preparations and reactions to this flu season.

To that end thanks in advance for taking the following actions:

·        Students who are sick should stay home from school and avoid other people until they are fever free for 24 hours and symptoms of illness are no longer present.

·        Please keep students home if they have a fever above 99.6

·        Before returning to school, the fever should have been controlled without the aid of medicines like aspirin, Tylenol, etc

·        Students should wash hands often with soap and water.

·        Students should cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing and sneezing into the inside of the elbow.

·        Students should stay at least three feet away from people who are sick.

Tips for Parents

As children return to school and spend less time outdoors and more time in confined spaces, such as classrooms, there may be a rise in influenza-like illnesses. Flu symptoms are highly contagious, particularly when people share close quarters as children do in school classrooms. Practicing some simple prevention tips can help slow the spread of colds and flu.

Preventive Measures

Please teach your children to follow these prevention tips to prevent the spread of disease:

Practice good hand hygiene: Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water, especially after they cough or sneeze. For more resources on hand hygiene, please visithttp://www.cdc.gov/cleanhands/.

Practice good respiratory etiquette: Remind your child to cover their nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing, and to throw the tissue in the trash after use. Please visitwww.cdc.gov/flu/protect/covercough.htm for more information.

Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth: Germs often spread this way.

Do not share personal items: like drinks, food, pencils and pens.

Ask about getting a flu shot: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that all children aged 6 months up to 19 years get a flu vaccine. Call your health care provider or the Orange County Health Referral line at (800) 564-8848. For more information please visit: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/children.htm.

When Flu Occurs

Know the signs and symptoms of the flu: These include fever (100 or higher), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired.

Don’t send children to school if they are sick: Those with flu-like illness should stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever, or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medicines (such as ibuprofen or Tylenol).

Keep your sick child in a separate room: Try as much as possible to limit contact with household members who are not sick.

Planning Ahead

Child care: Plan for child care at home if your child gets sick or their school is dismissed.

Monitor the health of the sick child and any other children in the household by checking for fever and other symptoms of flu. Remember: please keep your child home if they have fever or other flu-like symptoms.

Identify if you have children who are at higher risk of serious disease from the flu and talk to your healthcare provider about a plan to protect them during the flu season. Children at high risk of serious disease from the flu include: children under 5 years of age and those children with chronic medical conditions, such as asthma and diabetes.

For more information, please visit the Orange County Department of Educations H1N1/Flu website at http://www.ocde.k12.ca.us/flu_update.asp.

Volunteering in the Classroom

Starting September 8, 2009 unsupervised student contact volunteers will be required to provide criminal record clearance. If you haven’t done so already, you need to have a Livescan done and be fingerprinted.  There is a sign-up sheet for Livescan to come to the school in the office.  If you have any questions, you can contact Ronna Vladic at ronnav@cox.net.

If you have already gone through that process, and just need the District issued badge, please contact the District directly at (949) 234-9200 to set up a date to have your picture taken.

Note: Anyone approved after March 1, 2009 will be required to pay $5.00 for the District Badge.

Fee-based GATE/AAA Test Offered
Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) is offering public and private school parents living within the CUSD boundary area an opportunity to have their children take the fee-based Otis-Lennon School Abilities Test (OLSAT). The OLSAT is used by CUSD to identify students for the Accelerated Academic Achievement/Gifted and Talented Program (AAA/GATE). The OLSAT tests both verbal and nonverbal reasoning.

CUSD students who meet the criteria set by the District will be invited to take the OLSAT in January 2009 at their school site. (The criterion for OLSAT testing is listed on the CUSD AAA/GATE website at www.capousd.org/aaa http://www.capousd.org/aaa .) Invitations to take the January school site OLSAT will be mailed home the first week of December 2008. If a parent does not receive an invitation to take the OLSAT, he/she may have his/her child take the fee-based OLSAT on February 7, 2009. Students who score at or above the 95th percentile on the OLSAT qualify for the AAA/GATE program in the fall.

The fee-based OLSAT will be offered on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at George White Elementary School, in Laguna Niguel (Grades 2-8) and on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Capistrano Valley High School, in Mission Viejo (Grades 9-10). The cost for taking the OLSAT is $65.00. OLSAT registration forms will be available in all CUSD school administration buildings in December. Parents may also download the Fee-Based AAA/GATE Test Application from the CUSD AAA/GATE Website at www.capousd.org/aaa. Checks and registration forms must be postmarked by January 21, 2009 or delivered to the AAA/GATE Office before 4:30 pm on January 22, 2009, so that the appropriate number of tests can be ordered. No late registrations will be accepted.

Please Note: Kindergarten, first grade students, and students who have taken the OLSAT/NNAT in January 2009 at their school site are not eligible to take the Fee-Based OLSAT in February.
